Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Northwestern Mutual is an American mutual financial services company. The financial security company offers advice on estate planning, business planning, education planning, retirement planning, financial planning trust and private client services, wealth and asset income protection, and investment consulting services. Its offerings include annuities, investments, life insurance, permanent life insurance, disability income insurance, long-term care insurance, and goods and services for investment advisory services. [3] According to total revenue, Northwestern Mutual was placed No. 90 on the 2021 Fortune 500 list of the biggest American corporations, and it is among the top 30 in terms of assets held. [4] The company pays eligible policyholders an annual dividend made up in part of its profits.

HISTORY

On March 2, 1857, Northwestern Mutual was established as the Mutual Life Insurance Corporation of the State of Wisconsin. The young business, which had been based in Janesville, Wisconsin, moved to Milwaukee in 1859. When an excursion train from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to Chicago derailed, killing 14 people, including two policy holders, the business soon encountered its first two death claims. Since the company had only $2,000 in funds and losses totaled $3,500, company president Samuel Daggett and treasurer Charles Nash personally loaned the money to settle the claims right away. [6] [7]

The business distributed its first rewards to policyholders in 1864.

INVESTEMENT AND INNOVATION

In an effort to draw and keep tech talent in the Milwaukee area, the business joined forces with Accenture, Advocate Aurora Health, Johnson Controls, Kohl's, and Rockwell Automation in 2019. This coalition is known as the MKE Tech Hub Coalition. 

Additionally, Northwestern Mutual announced in June 2020 that it had pledged $1.6 million to All-In Milwaukee through its Foundation and in coordination with the Diversity and Inclusion department to support the most recent Talent of the Future initiative over the following four years.
